THE DETAILS:
There are only three types of relatives that are eligible to be sponsored by a Canadian:- Spouse or common‐law partner and
- Dependent children under 22 years of age who are not married or in a common‐law relationship
- Parents and grandparents
NOTE: On October 24, 2017, the maximum age limit of
a dependent child was increased from under 19 to under 22 years old.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- Always keep in mind that you need to be a Permanent Resident of Canada or a Canadian Citizen in order to sponsor a spouse, dependent child or your parents or grandparents. No other type of family member is eligible to be sponsored. That means you cannot sponsor or be sponsored by a sibling, cousin, niece, nephew or close friend.
- Unless you are married or common‐law you cannot sponsor your partner. An engagement provides no status in Canada.
- The types of relatives you can sponsor for permanent residence are very specific and no other types of relatives will be considered.
